FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where are you based?

I live and work in Perth, Western Australia, where you can watch the sun set over the ocean and pay over $5.00 for a regular coffee. It’s also home to Kings Park/Kaarta Koomba which is one of my most favourite places in the world, and a great inspiration for my jewellery.

Who makes the jewellery?

That would be me.
I do strive to be ‘handmade’ as much as possible, for my own enjoyment and pride, but to also offer something special to my customers. I truly believe there is something really wonderful about owning a handmade piece (I know, because I’ve bought lots of them!), and it is very important to me that I have been a part of making every piece that I sell.

Where do you get your work laser cut?

Lasers? What is this sorcery of which you speak? No, I don’t laser or machine cut my work. All my shape and pattern work is sawn by me and my little hands. It obviously takes longer and is more labour intensive but I do it because I love it! Sawing and piercing metal is one of my favourite things to do and I will do it for as long as I am able. It is an immensely satisfying process and the fact people assume I have laser cut my work makes me even more smug about it, so thanks for asking!

I am not against laser cutting, punching, casting or any other technological ‘help’, it’s just not what I do right now. Handmade and machine made are very different things and come with their own pros and cons. If I ever employ such methods I will always make the distinction in my product descriptions.

How do I look after the fabric buttons in your jewellery?

The fabric buttons are, let’s face it, pretty fabulous to behold, but they are still fabric and can be prone to staining or damage if neglected. There are a few easy things you can do to keep them safe and looking fabulous forever though. Please read through my delightfully long-winded (but hopefully helpful) care instructions for my jewellery here.

Where can I find you in store?

I am currently stocked in a few brick & mortar stores around WA. These stores and galleries are wonderful treasure troves that support many Western Australian artists and makers. Please visit them or check them out online, more details can be found on my Stockists page.

You will also find me at a few markets around town now and then, the best way to keep in the loop about those events is to follow my Instagram account @skljewellery. I will also update this website with any news as much as possible.
